As part of its worldwide Next Generation research program, the British Council in October 2022 set out to amplify youth voices from different nations with a core similarity; spotlighting a large youth population that will play a key role in the social, cultural and economic future of the countries.
Indonesia is home to over 200 million people, with 52 percent of whom are young people. In order to better serve the young people and the country as a whole, the Next Generation program aims to help everyone better understand attitudes and aspirations and support better youth policy making.
The survey was conducted during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and at the cusp of Indonesia’s Group of 20 presidency. With the data gathered, the Next Generation research has disseminated the results to youth groups, policy makers, academia and media with the aim to amplify the study result and inform the government of its policies and strategies on youth.
A quantitative Next Generation survey targeted young people aged 16-35 across Indonesia, an audience which represented approximately 32 percent of the Indonesian population. The questions presented were regarded on a number of topics, such as aspirations and socioeconomic contexts.
While the extensive report is very effective in identifying policies and room for improvements for the future, complete with conclusion and policy recommendations for each, The Jakarta Post has narrowed down four topics and the youth’s perceptions of them to grasp a better understanding of its summary.
